Social Security Disability Benefits

Obtaining Social Security is a two-part process. First, you must file the formal application listing all the necessary requirements. If denied, you may have to file a request for reconsideration. Finally, your case may have to be made before an administrative law judge. The Nicholas Law Firm, LLC will represent you through all stages of the Social Security application process. We represent residents of the Connecticut cities of Waterbury, Torrington, Litchfield, Winsted, and Bethlehem.

It is important to understand that you may file for Social Security benefits immediately after you become eligible. You should file a claim if you suffered an injury that prevents you from working to your full potential. You should consider filling out your SSI application before you reach the age of 65 to ensure it is correct.

Social Security Applications

Our attorneys will file the application for you, ensuring all necessary information is provided. We will schedule an appointment with an expert to make a medical and vocational determination of your disability. If you do not automatically meet the listing impairment requirements, you will have to have a doctor make a diagnosis that your disability hinders your ability to work.

You must meet the necessary income requirements to obtain SSI and SSD. Our lawyers will assess your financial situation to determine your eligibility and recommend ways to spend down your estate if necessary.

Social Security Hearings

If denied, you have a right to request a reconsideration hearing by the Social Security Administration. The government must prove you are capable of working in your given field or can be retrained. It is important to request an attorney soon after the denial of your request. You have only sixty days to request a hearing.

You will have to request a hearing before an administrative law judge (ALJ), because most times your reconsideration is denied. An appeal before an ALJ requires testimony of experts and understanding the vocational rehabilitative guidelines used by the government. We will represent you during all administrative hearings.
